Opening of the Spanish courses with an artistic tour through Colmenar

  • Image Gallery

This activity opened the new Spanish courses 2010-2011, a year in which we opt for an intensive program of cultural activities with which we want to show that learning Spanish is much more than only classes and with which we aim to bring students closer to the cultural reality of Colmenar, Andalusia, Spain and the Hispanic world in general.

The tour began at the Plaza de España, where we were informed of the origin of our people, insisted by José that Colmenar is not a traditional Arab village, as Comares, but it was Christian from the beginning of the manor. From the square we walked to the calle Pósito, where we stopped to be informed about  the traditional architecture of Colmenar and also to introduce the figure of Alfonso Molina Padilla.

We arrived at the Ermita de la Virgen de la Candelaria (also called the convent), where José explained the possible origin of its construction and the similarities with the people of Benagalbón. The most interesting thing was to know that in the Canaries, in the town of Candelaria (which houses the patron saint of the islands) the church is also called Nuestra Señora de la Asunción, which gives enough credence to the hypothesis that the Ermita de Colmenar was built by Augustinian monks from the Canaries in gratitude for having survived a shipwreck off the coast of Malaga.

We walked down calle Ermita to the Rincón de la Bodega, where Francisco Blanco (from Bodegas Francisco Blanco and Taberna de Flores) was kind enough to show his winery, possibly the oldest building in Colmenar. We were told here that the building not always had been a winery, and that during the postwar period it was a school, where our friendly guide José Barba recalled how the classes were in his childhood.

Francisco Blanco offered us a tasting of wines, among which featured a sweet wine of more than 50 years, which was developed by his grandfather. A luxury, given that Francisco told us that there are only 30 to 40 liters of this fantastic wine.

After the winery we went to the Iglesia de Nuestra Señora de la Asunción, which we could admire quietly and where José Barba finished telling the story of our village.

Finally we went down calle Empedrada, cross the Plaza de los Carros and we had an apetizer in the Peña Flamenca El Canario de Colmenar, of which José is also secretary, telling the story of the flamenco bar and the activities that they organize.
